This is a story of how a small data team changed the data culture of a large electrical utility with $27.1B(1) in assets. Focusing on the communication strategy in the initial stages of the Data Governance program made “Data Quality” part of the mainstream corporate language. An enterprise-wide program was implemented to centralize Data Governance initiatives, previously spread across numerous business functions, resulting in a common structure and language that facilitated collaboration. The data team inspired stakeholders to turn data pain points into aspirational data quality targets.

Helen Poletes, as Director of Data Governance, is reinventing the data strategy for Hydro One that focuses on the management and governance of data. As a CPA, Helen has over 25 years of diverse global experience in finance and governance and more recently is applying her skills to the development and execution of the data strategy for Hydro One. Hydro One Limited, through its wholly-owned subsidiaries, is Ontario, Canada's largest electricity transmission and distribution provider with approximately 1.4 million valued customers, approximately $27.1 billion(1) in assets as at December 31, 2019, and annual revenues in 2019 of approximately $6.5 billion.
